Been awhile since I posted. Have been water fasting for health reasons and haven't had much energy. Today is my 10th day. Decided to start drinking juice so I have some energy to get things done but still allow my body to cleanse and detoxify itself. So far so good. Anyway on to my topic.
I believe we are headed into much worse times and that prudence dictates taking some precautions to protect against them. I have been stockpiling food and some other needed supplies. My family and I can do without a lot of things but food is not one of them. However a more important basic need is water. What to do about water? I have my own well so all I need is the power to operate the pump. Yeah I could get a hand pump and attach it but my water would still be undrinkable. Florida has lousy water. I put a solar hot water heater on my house about 1 year ago and have been very pleased with the results. It provides about 95% of all my hot water. I paid $3700 for the system installed and immediately got a $500 rebate from the state. I also got an $1110 federal tax rebate. So my total cost was $2090. I have saved about $45 per month on my electric bill ever since or $540 over the last year. The system will completely pay for itself in less than 4 years. It also increased the value of my house by the amount spent on it. No brainer as an investment. But it needs a little power to run it and to run my water treatment system.
I decided to buy a solar photo-voltaic system to put on my roof for two reasons. Number 1, to provide security and comfort for my family by making sure the basic needs we have will be met regardless of what happens around us. Number 2, it is a great investment and will generate a big return on my money. Here are the details; I just signed a contract to purchase a 4.3 kw solar pv system for my house. It will be grid-tied with
a battery bank back-up. It will cost me $39,400 up front and I will get back a $17,200 rebate from the state of florida and an $11,820 tax credit from uncle sam. So my total cost after rebates for the installed system will be around $10,380. It should generate about $1000 per year in electrical cost savings at current rates. About a 10% return on my money pretty much guaranteed per year and will increase the value of my house by about $30k
( 300% return). It will also make me pretty much energy independent in the case of a grid failure which is the real reason I am getting it. No matter how you look at it due to the government handout it is a very smart investment.
I will have refrigeration, lights, fans, cooking, washing, clean water, hot water and could also power a small room a/c unit if needed. With this system up and running I will be in a very good situation if things get worse and power becomes scarce, unreliable or non-existent. And if prices on electricity continue to rise I will profit even more.
